Have a little respect or the remainder of the world won't either...

By tonyalvarez2003 - Posted on 13 September 2009

As a Captain in the USAF who served and defended our country in Desert Storm,  I know a little about how the military works and it is based on a chain of command and respect.  Disrespect for our superiors can be devestating because our ability to defend ourselves will fall into chaos.

This is not to say we can't disagree...I completely understand that we don't all agree with our president on many issues.  No one has ever agreed completely with any president.  But it is very important we maintain respect for the office.  When we openly disrespect his office the rest of the world, including our enemies see this and they begin to lose respect for us as well.  These are the seeds to their boldness to challenge us and to terrorists to believe there are kinks in our armor.

I fought for demorcracy and totally  believe in it, and not agreeing with our president is our right as Americans.  But lets take care NOT to do it openly for the rest of the world and our enemies to see.

Our "Unitedness" has always been our strength.  Our perceived strength to our enemies and the rest of the world has protected us more than all our actual military strength ever has or will.

I am dissapointed that this site is not fair in that it disrespects our president with all the silly images of our president and obvious slant against him.  If you really want unbiased opinions, then be unbiased yourselves.  Be neutral so your attempt to see how the American people really feel is sincere and genuine.

I'm not very political, I just know that we live in a global world now more than ever; our country and our very lives are under the watchful eyes of our enemies.  The more weakness we show through open disrespect as done by Joe Wilson to our president, the more the world loses respect for his office and us as a country.  We ourselves will create greater possibilities of terrorist attacks and possible wars which ultimately lead to the loss of American lives.   I survived my service to my country and thus am able to speak for those who have served and now cannot.

Joe Wilson himself has four children in the military.  I am sure he would not condone his children openly disrespecting their superiors.  Joe Wilson has the right like any other American to disagree with our president, but as a member of congress who openly calls our president a liar, he needs to realize that our enemies may see such acts as a sign of discord and weakness in our government that for all we know may lead to Mr. Wilson actually endangering his own children without realizing it.

Disagree if you must, but lets's show our enemies that we are still and forever will be "United"  and our democratic system does work and does not require demeaning or disrespecting our country's leaders.  If it does, then we will no longer be seen as an example to the rest of the world.  Remember disrespecting our leaders may be our right...but it does not necessarily make it right.

Let's not jeopardize more American lives by openly disrespecting the president...any president.  If you disagree in any aspect of how this country is run, we have a system in place for voicing it.  It may not be perfect by a great stretch, but it is the great system I and others fought for.  Honor it.

Dear Tony,

and all of you who have responded courteously, yet honestly and I believe sincerely. Our great country is the only country that perhaps is allowed to agree to disagree. Everyone who has commented on this particular posting was polite, and put much effort in explaining their personal state of opinions with regards to the present times and the situations in this country.

I believe most of us totally respect the position of the office of Presidency for the United States of America. Then again we do expect our President to do so likewise for his constituents. The people of this country have been apologized for on more than one occasion to foreign officials with radio and television broadcasting throughout the entire free world to hear. This in itself shows weakness and lack of uniformity between our leaders and our citizenry. Where does the President come across stating that our country is not a christian country, when our for -fathers used the word many times on so many documents. 'In God we trust". The president not letting Christians to honor prayer day but allowing Muslims to pray. I do not find this agreeable, fair or united, but far left racist.

President Obama has a specific agenda which he wishes to follow and complete as quickly as possible. However he has been caught in lies, misdirection of words, mis-interpretation of words and contradicting himself, which has been proven quite frequently in video's. The video's are not dubbed or reworked but actual excerpts taken from many of his speeches.

Perhaps this may be an area someone could present to Mr. Obama, that he has made more public speeches than days in office. That being said there is much controversity when he states the exact opposite he stated previously. Perhaps someone could tell him not to say so much, less said, less controversy.

I also have served for honor and freedom in this country in the military service as a fighter pilot instructor. No one knows better about order of command in flying instrument navigation and  I also followed commands and orders, weather agreeable or not. This is the order of command and is a foundation for military troops. Yours is not to question or ask but simply follow the order or task. But we are not in the service, but are  American citizens in all different aspects of life and have thoughts that this President and his staff is not following the will and choice of the majority of people. If he were in the service, he would be court marshaled for not following the orders of the people who actually placed him in office. Also his staff is proven to be, and not yet disputed by anyone, as Marxist's and communists with many radical thoughts and ideas. Radical Marxists and communists thoughts or actions do not sit well with retired service personnel.

The President hand picks a general to be on the ground in Afghanistan and then silences him because he does not want controversy to rise because he does not follow the advice of the actual person he put in the war theater to advise him. Since then 56 soldiers have died needlessly in harms way because he needs to strategies. He has never set foot in the theater and has never served in the military, don't you think the general is more qualified to strategies?

He has attempted through his cabinet to control free speech with net neutrality, uses rhetoric to define who is a news station and one who has an agenda. He wants government health care, well as a soldier would you want your family to be subjected to the Veteran's Administration? (Government Health Care).

I thought your posts were very well thought out and grammaticallycorrect. I however did not agree or disagree with you but just expressed a few of the errors made by this administration that is affecting our soldiers over there our soldiers over here as well as our civilian population. The items mentioned are not even 10% of errors, indecision's, and mis-guided actions made by this administration to date.

First off, thank you for your service - and I truly do mean that.  I also really like everything you've written, and agree with "some of it."  I, like you, was not very political until P.O. took office.  I was angry with the posters of P. O. as the joker, and anything disrespectuly like that is just simply wrong.  But P. O. has disrespected the American People as well.  He's acting like he has his own agenda, and the American People be damned.  I lost some respect for him when he mentioned after the first 9/12 Tea Party that he really didn't notice it.  He's pushing his agendas and using the weight of the W.H. to do it.  But, I lost all respect for him today when I heard he stopped the day of prayer for Christians, but allowed it for Muslims.  I am not predjudiced in any way shape or form, but to say NO to some Americans and say YES to other Americans is just wrong - in so many ways.  I do understand it's one thing to be angry with the decisions P. O. makes, and quite another to loose respect for that person/office.  I am angry.  Very angry.  And while I do not think there is any way he will gain my respect back, I will take the high road and respect his office, while I fight civily against his agendas and plans that seem to be trying to take this country down.

Hello Site Administrator and concerned others,

Let me first say that you come across extremely articulate, tolerant and knowledgeable.  Your response was well put and thought out.  You don't come across as some extremist.  I like what you had to say and I believe in your site and forum and understand the reasoning behind the site's slant.  I hope in time as it grows it will be recognized as a voice of the American people by lawmakers.

My profession is actually that of Web Site Development, SEO and internet marketing.  I understand your need for visibility in order to get more Americans involved.  If you think I could help in this area, I would definitely consider doing all I can.  My fear is that people on this site may become overly zeallous in their negativity toward our leaders...I hate to put it this way but it would be bad if this site came across like an angry mob out to bring down the president.  I really hope that this site and those of others will impact our system of government in ways that will shape a better America, since I plan to keep living here too.

That being said, I see such great importance to your efforts.  Yes, like you I love my country and am patriotic, but like you I am not blind to its shortcomings.  We realize that no system of government is ever going to be perfect..but there is nothing wrong in wanting to make it the best it can be.

After all my prior postings have come across as someone who is bathing in the deceptions of our lawmakers; you may be quite surprised at some of my other views.

I think back on human history, and time and again regimes, societies and governements that were not kept in check resulted in great human suffering of its citizens and often in the need for revolution.  Your site and the many people who share the view that government must be held accountable helps keep it in check.  If it wasn't for you it would only get so impossible for everyone that overthrowing the current powers would be necessary.   Bottom line, those that keep our government honest are doing a great service to our way of life.  Thank you.

I too want to be a part of it.  I see many things in government that should not be happening.  I just feel powerless to do something about it.  At least it feels that way to each individual.  But there is strength in numbers and I believe that there needs to be a much stronger voice being sent to our government that they are crossing alot of lines that are very wrong for them to do so.  I believe our government through deception is doing alot of things that most people aren't even aware of.  Big brother is invading our personal privacy and individual rights too much.  I feel the noose is being tightened like so many fish in a trawler's net.  We live by social security numbers and more is being done to track and control our lives.  Our taxes, our driving record, our criminal record, our travel, our political views, the organizations we join, whether we own a gun or not, which web sites we view, what we chose to do for a living, etc.  The cover that is used as reasoning for all of this is for national security purposes, however is being extended well beyond what is reasonable.  The Naional Security argument could be used in every remaining aspect of our lives.  Profiling could be allowed, daily monitoring of our activities, etc, etc.

Recently I was denied approval of my PayPal account because my name was on some list that restricted it by the government.  Basically, by virtue of my name alone, not anything else I was being restricted from a number of things in my life.  It took months to get PayPal and my understanding is that I will never come off that list.  Like they say, "Something is wrong in Denmark".

I also hear that the government has been encouraging people to get a GPS chip inserted under their skin.  Many people see this as extremely beneficial for finding their dogs or kids and other purposes.  But we can be sure that in the name of national security or for the welfare of all citizens it will become mandatory.  That is when it goes too far.

I belive that these GPS chips could easily contain all our information.  The benefits will be that they will have the ability to be scanned easily to pay for items as we do ATM cards.  Our medical history can be accessed by paramedics at the scene of an accident.  But this also means that our financial information, medical information, purchases and any other same information the government could chose to monitor on these chips. Our every move, transaction, work history, purchase, monetary deposit or withdrawl, opinions, sympathies, clubs, groups, private activities, social activities, and life history could be tracked.  Perhaps this is inevitable which makes the future sound frightening.

But it is these things and the growing power of the government over our lifes that is a true threat to the American way of life.  At this point we are suffering a great threat of the loss of personal rights as well as a deteriorated lifestyle as a result of the mistakes and greed of our government leaders.  If the American people don't rise up and yell "Foul, this much and no more".  The government will steam roll right over everything we hold sacred and necessary as a free nation.  The process is designed to be inscidious, but over time we feel it and see it more and more clearly.  I hope that every American's eyes are opened to this.  Complacency, ignorance and fear of what is happening are the cancer of freedom.

There is much more that the governent is doing that is hurting us as a poeple and our future freedoms.  Most of you could name many more things that are going on that are very well calculated by the government and made into law behind legal and illegal cloakes of secrecy and deception.

I served my country as an officer and in war.  I fly a flag outside my home everyday and I want to believe in our president and lawmakers.  But their actions have spoken louder than the words in their speeches and they have too often hurt us as a people and our freedoms.  Our way of life is being quicly chipped away and eroded as fast as the melting of the polar caps.  If we stand by and do nothing we are allowing the possibility of horrendous and irreversable outcomes.

No, dissenting is not unpatriotic, it is what this country was founded on.  And now it is the only thing standing in between what we have and what we stand to lose as a people.  No, dissenting is the battle cry of the patriot.  It creates the checks and balances that sustains our democracy.  And I believe our democracy and our way of life is being threatened now more than ever in our country's history.

Again, I applaud every American that strives to maintain the balance of power between those that govern and those that are governed.  I am convinced that to restore this balance that our government needs to give back ground that belongs to the American people.  I pray that the will of the American people will rise up and make it clear to our lawmakers that they are overstepping their bounds and treading on democracy itself.

If you ever decide to send any posting to our lawmakers, please consider this my permission to send any posts that I have written.  I am one small voice in the larger cause of the American people and no one should be afraid to speak as a check and balance for democracy.

Tony,

I normally refrain from posting on this site under the admin handle, but I wanted to lend some creditability to my response.

I am not sure if the President or anyone in our government has taken notice of the site yet or the comments posted on it.  The site was launched a little over two weeks ago and getting people to know about the site and use the site has been as much as a challenge as building the site.  The good news is that the community is growing, so my hope is that as the months go by the site will raise more and more attention and D.C. will take notice.

I originally planned to mail the president a summary of all the postings each month, but I abandoned the idea when I was at the March on Washington passing out postcards people could mail to the president and heard multiple people express their concern that the "president would then have their name on his list".  I am not saying I fully agree with this statement being a reality, but I changed plans to encourage people to post who might normally be a bit hesitant or shy in voicing an opinion that differs from the Presidents'.  Instead, the site will sponsor occasional initiatives to express our self directly to Congress and the President (for instance, our Letter to Congress).  Maybe in the near future we will be able to take back up the idea of sending postings to the President each month, as this is something I think would be a good service.

I have no outside ambitions for the site other than to provide a platform for people to share their thoughts and ideas regarding the direction of and steps our country is currently taking.  Much of the current content posted is, as you said, "slanted" towards a disagreement with this direction.  And I will not refute that the Obama cartoons and even the domain name lend to this.  This was by design because I felt that the conservative voice could easily be lost in the transition to a new administration and left out of the conversation as the new administration began carrying out their ambitions. I find it highly important for this voice to grow with ideas and thoughts, and I believe (just like on any other site where people come together) that by gathering together and sharing our thoughts, voicing our opinions, and even having debates and disagreements, this will happen. You can bring any two people together, people who you might guess to have similar opinions, and sit them down in a room and you can be guaranteed that they will not agree 100% on politics.  This is good.  What I want is for them to sit down on this site and have that discussion.  I am not looking for people to join with the same opinions, but for people to join with the same ideal - and this ideal is a desire for a stronger, safer America that is ruled by the people and for the people.

You bring up the issue of censorship.  I want to let you know that I have never removed a posting on this site (regardless of its political persuasion) and I have never banned any user posting comments that go "against the grain".  The cartoons of Obama are being used to illustrate some of the ideas that put American at risk (i.e. overspending).  Obama gets the honor of his picture being drawn in these images because he is currently the President, currently at the helm, and currently responsible.  If people view this expression of thought as censorship and refrain from posting, than I think they would equally find any posting that is not in agreement with them a form of censorship.

I want to thank you for your thoughtful, well written posting.  It was excellent, and I enjoyed reading it.  I hope that you will continue to post on the site and feel free at any time to contact me with further ideas, thoughts, or suggestions.

To answer your question about if the Government will ever see these comments, I'd say yes.  I have a little blog where I post my rants and found a little surprise the other day.  Check out the referring URL at the bottom.

I totally understand and appreciate the resonses to my post.  It's actually inspiring that people are using this site and concerned.  Personally, I have no idea how many people actually come to this site.  I wonder if all these comments are ever viewed from anyone in governement much less the president.  Do you think any of our representatives actually view this site?  It's well intended but I don't think they do.

Again, I appreicate everyone's comments and appreciate thanking me for my service. I actually loved it and am glad I did it and was able to go on and have a life,  which saddens me when I think of so many who served and never got that.  So I will share your appreciation of my service with all those that didn't survive.  And I want to say I appreciate that you disagreed but did not attack me personally...thanks guys.

Like I said, I served and love my country but have never thought of myself as a political person.  I have allowed myself to beliieve that we as citizens have so little influence on what happens to us.  But I do realize that nobody has the entire picture and all the facts on both sides of the issues.  There is just too much to know to say that one person's opinion is more informed than the next.  Besides the information we have at our disposal can't  always be trusted to be the absolute truth of the matter.  Media and so many others twist and torture the truth until we don't know what to believe.  But as was said, we are all entitled to our opinions, which is what this is all about.

But my main points in my posting were just this.  One.  Althugh I understand this site's purpose is to allow anyone to discuss the president.  But it is all salnted against him.  Yes cartoons have been around forever, but think about the average person posting on here may feel compelled to attack the president.  The slant against the president may keep many people from saying anything positive about the president.  Isn't that initself a form of censorship this site so advocates against?  Having a positive perspective or opionion is our right also, including on this site.  Should I be afraid to say that I really like Obama and what he is doing (not all).  Will I be attaced for opposing the negative slant of this site.  That is why it should be nuetral.  I am not saying that we who post should be neutral sheep and fall in line.  I am only saying that posters should not feel pressured into only making negative comments because the obvious slant against the president.  I would be a sheep if I just joined the crowd of popular opinion on here.  I feel that I am exercising my right as an american to express an opposing positive opinion.

They say that "The domain of true freedom is not the opinion of the crowd, but that of the individual".

The second thing I think was misunderstood was that people assumed I meant that in governement or anywhere in our contry we should not disagree, argue, disparage, or poke fun at anyone including our president.  My point was that Joe Wilson did not make his comment during a congressional session in a forum of debate, but made during a presidential speech during which is not the forum for debate or outbursts against the president.  There are many other forums for that, but not during his speech.

According to what I heard was that this is highly inappriate behavior and always has been that way.  If Joe Wilson disagreed with the president's speech  then he needed to bite the bullet like everyone else and hear what he had to say.  Could you imagine if it was allowed?  There would be total chaos with outbursts and insults hurled in every direction. The president would be completely unable to address the country.  It would be impossible to maintain any order and you would end up like other countrys that throw shoes at their leaders.  No, this is the one time that  decorum must take the front seat.  The address is not just for congress but for the country.  People need to know what the president has to say and if congress was shouting over his speech, then it would deny every american from hearing what he has to say.  Even Joe wilson himself realized he was wrong.  He admitted his emotion got the best of him and he is well aware that wasn't the time for an outburst.  During a session allowing debate, I don't care what he says to the president or anyone he disagrees with.  If other members let his outburst pass, then it only encourages others to do so next time.

As far as that it was done to Bush and past presidents is true. , but it doesn't mean that they were right or that they should continue.  Perhaps if they had been more strongly discouraged Joe Wilson would have better understood its inapproriateness.

Please, please understand that I agree that debate, personal opinions and making disparaging comments is every American's right,  But not in that forum.  Honest dissent has a hundred other venues....like this site.

And the point of desiring "Unitedness" in our country doesn't mean we become sheep.  Is it possible we could evolve to the point of striking a balance between disagreeing and "Unitedness"?  Isn't that what we shouuld be striving towards.

I am sure most of you abide by our laws.  You comply with traffic laws.  You don't run red lights and drive 100mph do you?  You comply, but this doesn't make you sheep.  You do it for the "Greater Good".  If you look hard at your life, you will notice many things you do each day that you comply with.  Your job's directives and policies.  If the rules of our society aren't complied with, then we can hardly call ourselves a society.  It would be lawless and someone could break into your home and steal and murder your family.  Everyone would run red lights.  No one would pay taxes.  So who would pay the fireman who you expect to save your burning home?  Who would pay the police who protect us?  No, we pay taxes and comply with many, many statutory rules, social rules and corporate rules...but we are not sheep.  I totally agree with the fight to keep from it swinging too far and making us sheep.  But the best society will be that one that can strike the best balance between individual rights and the rights of the whole.

As far as "Unitedness" leading to the rule of people like hitler and Stalin.  My view is that only the countrys and civilizations that have been united have every survived or contributed to mankind.   At the dawn of man, it was our Unitedness that helped us survive against every threat.  Every ancient civilization that became anything worthwhile were United.  Every great accomplishment....the pyramids, Aztec and Mayan monuments, Incas, etc were done by civilizations that were United.  Not only what they created but their development of science, mathematics, the arts, etc. came from them. Do you know of any significant accomplishments that come from civilizations that were not united  No, because they are unheard of.  They existed but never survived.

Even during wars (which are horrible events) countrys pull together and become even more United.  We work as one which is our greatest strength.  And it is during this Unitedness that mankind has developed it's most astounding accomplishments.  The space race got us to the moon.  WWII brought uncountable acheivements in science, industry and technology.  Jet aircraft were born of that war.  Nuclear energy which we light our homes with came out of that war.  Uncountable things come from the times we are most united.

Unfortunately, it is a two-edged sword.  If too much power falls in the lap of an evil leader then evil things will come from it.  Just like fire itself is not bad in itself...it depends in whose hands its in.  There are many great civilizations that were not evil in nature.  But unfortunately, man in all his goodness also has an evil nature.  And we all know that power currupts absolutely and absolute power corrupts absoultely.

My point is that only civiizations that were United survived and have influenced the true advancement for mankind.  But at the same we have learned from the past that too much power leads to corruption and too much Uniteness runs the risk of becoming evil and oppressive.

My point is that we need both.  Unitedness and the right to dissent.  The society that finds that balance will truly be the best society to live in.

I applaud your desire and efforts to preserve our indivdual rights and to disagree with anything or anyone we chose. It is as American and necessary as compliance.  You are grateful for poeple like me who served my country right or wrong, and I am grateful for the dissenters who strive to keep us from becoming sheep or living in an oppressive society.  My hope for our future to remain  the greatest nation on earth is that we  evolve as the forces of ying and yang.  Opposing forces but still existing in harmony.

Finally, the president may be making many mistakes, but which one of us would take his job and could assure the rest of us you could do better???

Thank you for your service..Tony

When you are in the Military, you take orders from your superiors and you do them because that is what you do....right?...you take orders and you accomplish those orders....thats what I did when I was in the Army....they gave me orders and I did what I was told...because I was in the military!.....now I am a civilian...a Free AMERICAN living in a Free society.....alot of Military Personell gave thier lives for me to have this Freedom and I am Grateful.....this Freeedom is only available in one location on Planet Earth....AMERICA!.....we agree and disagree....are republican and democrat....but in the end we are ..AMERICANS.....the enemies you speak about , were your enemies before Mr. Joe Wilson said what he said....and they are still your enemies...right now....and they will Always be your enemy...because of this so called FREEDOM.....and we express this in different forms...with all due respect, our agreements and disagreements do not make us Vulnerable...it is the decisions that our Senate,Congress and President(who was voted in) make! Guantanamo....CIA....FBI....Nuclear Secrets...calling terrorism what it is!.enemies against freedom.....remember 9/11?......just to name a few are what will keep Americans Safe

It would not take much looking to find video of Bush being booed in the chamber during a speech.  Those that are up in arms now, were showing their disrespect not to long ago.

I remember seeing Bush drawn as Hitler, a clown, a monkey, a spoiled kid, the devil and the Bush/Joker poster was touted as great art in either Time or Newsweek.

Obama is not showing any dignity on his own.  His appologuising for America at every overseas stop doesn't show it, his appointments of Communists, Socialists and radicals to White House positions does.

It's the nature of the beast.  There will always be political attacks against whoever is in the Big Chair.

Thank you for your service BTW!

Tony

I too thank you for your service.  However I disagree with much you said:

1.  Political satires and politcal cartoons have been around as long as politics in America have been around.  In fact, they are probably one of the oldest forms of political commentary, and that is because they communicate their message quickly and in a fun way.  To say a cartoon of Obama is disrespectful is really a stretch....in my opinion "respect" of the office does not eliminate one from humor or satire.  Or do you equally object to Jay Leno and Coburn?

2.  Though two wrongs do not make a right, President Obama disrespected the office and disrespected the setting in his speech by his slanted, partisan references to Bush, Palin, and talk radio.  His speech was full of political attacks and so why is everyone ranting that he met some resistance.  In my opinion, he showcased to the world how un-united he wants America when he began to criticize a president that served this country on that stage.  No other sitting president has done this so obiviously.

3.  I hate when people strive for "neutrality".  What does that mean?  That means you don't have an opinion.  My participation on this site is not neutral.  I care about the country and I care about stoping the direction that President Obama is taking it.  I have no desire to be neutral in my expression of this.  My assessment is the result of my own evaluation of my thoughts, ideas, and values.....its called an OPINION.

4.  I find it very patriotic to object and criticize the president.  That IS what America is about.  We are not sheep meant to fall in line.  I wonder if those who led us in our independence were presented with the same arguement....."you shouldn't criticize the King"

5.  Our open disagreement, including those made by Joes Wilson, show the world what a functioning democracy does.  We disagree.  We argue.  And when the day is over we still both stand as Americans.  Our strength is that we allow differing opinions and that we are allowed to voice them....not that we are "united" in ALL thoughts, ideas, and opinions.

6.  I personally do not resign myself to making my voice heard only through the voting booth.

Tony,

First let me say thank you for your service to our nation. However I have to completely disagree with your comments above.  As President John F. Kennedy said "Without debate, without criticism, no administration and no country can succeed and no republic can survive."

Your type of fear has been used by politicians from the dawn of time to stifle dissent and consolidate power.  The only reason Fascism has never been able to take hold in this country is because the loyal opposition is guaranteed by the constitution the right to free speech and organization.  Please realize that your quest for "Unitedness" is what Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Russia where able to realize.

The site makes no claim to be neutral.  I feel the major media falls in line with your type of childish devotion to president Obama. Thankfully there are sites like this that will actually look at his decisions critically.  As President Dwight D. Eisenhower said "May we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion."
